Why get business coaching?

There are lots of good reasons to get a coach, but one of my favourite is because you want to. As a business leader everything is on your shoulders: sometimes it helps to have a friendly coach alongside who’s cheering you on when you feel like you are running out of steam. It can be a tough (but rewarding!) gig to create, run and grow a good business. You’re entitled to a bit of help and support along the way, just to make it all feel a bit more do-able on days / in seasons when it doesn’t 😊

Other reasons include:

  • you want something to change and the things you’ve tried so far have not moved the needle. Sometimes change needs someone else’s perspective or experience - because if you knew how to do it differently you’d have done it already! It’s a chance to add a different factor into your business mix.

  • you need quality time to THINK about your business. A session with a coach is a slot in the diary when you will get that time. They will listen and reflect what you’re saying and that can be enormously helpful. Often you have the answers already but you haven’t had the opportunity to think clearly enough to figure out what you know/think… this is particularly true if it’s something that you may have an interest in avoiding getting to grips with.

  • you need speedy results. Coaches who have done the thing you want to do many times can be a short cut to getting it done asap with a proven method. Helps you profit from the valuable mistakes/learning of others!

  • you need something to get out of your usual comfort zone. We naturally shape our businesses around our own strengths. Sometimes the next level of improvement requires us to stretch into areas we are not so comfortable with. A coach can see your potential more clearly than you can. You can ‘borrow’ some of their confidence

3 top tips when considering coaching

  1. Before approaching coaches, define your problem in your terms. What would success look like for you? What has got in your way so far? Brainstorm some theories (3 - 10). You probably have a good insight into what you are struggling with if you spend some time to try and tease it out.

  2. Research! Interview 3 to 5 (or more!) coaches. Look for someone who lights you up …. you’re looking for a magic combination: a connection with a coach which will get you moving and help you create exciting, new results in your business.

  3. Start small. The work to get results will mostly stay on your plate (sorry to break it to you!). Your coach is a catalyst that gets you mobilised… not a magic fairy who removes your issues with a flick of her wand. Build good foundations for your coaching relationship by starting with smaller problems and early successes. And then, once you have proof it works, you can scale it up!
